Do you need an editor?
You may need editing services if…

Publication: You have a draft of an article, dissertation, or book manuscript, and editorial staff or committee members have told you to seek editorial advice—what? You’ve literally been working with them on this for months. Why now?!

An editor does a lot more than fix dangling participles and commonly misspelled words. They will fix or flag:
- repetitive argumentation
- internally contradictory arguments or poorly used counterarguments
- places where non-SMEs (subject-matter experts) will get lost
- repetitive or confusing language patterns within and across paragraphs and chapters
- incorrectly cited reference material
Your ideas are good. The last thing anybody wants is a large language model (generative AI) to pump and dump your text for simple and superficial refinements.

On average, the typical AI assistant summarizes the first 5-10 pages of a “long” pdf without scanning any further.
If your argument is not completely stated in your first five pages—and most academic works cannot possibly achieve such a complex mission with this level of brevity—the machine will not capture it.
You may want an editor if…
Your end goal is a premium edit that clearly communicates your ideas and research findings for maximum impact.

Promotions: You want to put the key pieces of your output in the best possible shape before a career assessment.

Access: You have been struggling to gain entry to that conference or to get that grant for years, and you need help figuring out what to do differently this time.

Exposure: You’ve listened to the experts and aimed for 100 rejections a year. You’ve tried to get 5% acceptance rates. You are leaving a trail of creative juices behind you in tea and tears. Collaboration is everything in writing, art, and life. Let an editor help.
Editing, like ink wash painting, refines the intense artistry applied by the author, allowing new expressions and ideas to unfold. Editing is collaborative but temporary work—the ink splashed on an already wet canvas, set to spread, set, and quickly dry. What once lay dense in the brush of the author, with only a little water, unfolds for the eyes of the reader.
