Ink Wash Edits was founded on the principle that editing, like ink wash painting, refines the intense artistry applied by the author, allowing new expressions and ideas to unfold.
Editing is collaborative but temporary work—the water splashed on an already-inked canvas, set to spread, set, and quickly dry.
What once lay dense in the brush of the author needs only a splash of water to unfold for the eyes of the reader, enabling art to be shared by all.
Anne Rebull, PhD (EALC)
Academic editor (humanities and social sciences)
I became an editor because everybody deserves to present their best self to colleagues who are assessing them for new degrees, new positions, new promotions, new titles, new grants, and every opportunity between.
I edit articles, dissertations, manuscripts, proposals, book chapters, book reviews, abstracts, grant applications, web-published news articles, and academic portfolios, including CVs and research, teaching, and diversity statements. I can assist with translations from Chinese and localization for American culture. Aside from my position with the Chinese Historical Review, I work with an agency on application materials for colleges and graduate programs, including word-count reductions. I especially welcome texts from non-native English speakers.
Experience: Ten+ years of independent editing and two years with AJE/Research Square Company, an agency affiliated with the publisher Springer Nature. With AJE/RSC, I edited on the business/humanities team, but I also covered topics in the social sciences, as well as generalist writing in law and education. I can format to AP, CMOS 18 or 17 (Turabian), MLA, APA 7, Harvard, Vancouver, and any number of publishing house styles. I hold a copyediting certificate from UC San Diego.
Disciplines: Literature and literary theory, gender studies, history, film studies, music (theory, history, ethnomusicology), performing arts, public policy, political science, linguistics, translation studies, and anthropology. In economics, Ive worked with behavioral economics, game theory, agricultural economics, environmental economics, markets, ESG, and econometrics.
Special expertise: Chinese humanities and social sciences (Yuan dynasty to current day). I can proofread and revise translations from Chinese to English in both modern and classical. I emphasize both accessibility for target readers and respect for the source text. I completed both advanced degrees at the University of Chicago and spent several years in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. My own work was interdisciplinary and I specialize in helping authors whose work must speak to wide audiences, across fields of study and across levels of expertise.
