Translation Work
Copyediting Tiers
Proofreading and editing are different kinds of services, especially when they are performed for a press. However, if you are a solo author looking for the difference between tiers of intervention, please consider the following set of files.
I have examined this text, which is a fragment of fiction publicly supplied as a proofreading test online, on multiple occasions. I regard each of these edits as the absolute extreme limit of what I would be willing to do for a client—the absolute minimum before editorial indecency and the maximum at my current rates before we would need to talk about ghostwriting (“scrivening” on my editing services page).
The light version risks underplaying the value of the insights in the fiction’s natural imagery.
The heavy version risks deeply distorting the author’s voice in the name of bringing out their artistic intent.
The comments to the author begin with “AU:”, but I have also supplied comments in italics that explain my thinking on some choices as you compare these two texts. These are the kinds of questions that go into the editing process and what the editing fee pays for beyond basic spelling, grammar, and style.
